POLICIES & PROCEDURES:
FIRST AID

This policy outlines Crosby Training’s arrangements for providing effective first aid support to staff, learners, visitors, and contractors. It covers both onsite and offsite activities and ensures compliance with health and safety legislation and recognised first aid standards. Crosby Training is committed to maintaining appropriate first aid provision – a risk-based approach considers workplace activities, learner needs, offsite delivery, and safeguarding responsibilities. Mental Health First Aid forms part of the organisation’s wellbeing support but does not replace emergency medical treatment, safeguarding procedures, or professional healthcare.

FIRST AID PROVISION

A First Aid Needs Assessment is conducted and reviewed regularly to ensure:

  • Appropriate first aid equipment and facilities are available.
  • Sufficient trained first aid personnel are in place.
  • Mental Health First Aid responders are available to provide initial support and signposting.
  • Arrangements remain suitable for onsite and offsite activities.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Senior Management Team: Overall responsibility for policy implementation, resources, and compliance.
  • Health & Safety Lead: Conducts assessments, manages training, monitors provision, and reviews incidents.
  • First Aid Trained Staff: Provide first aid within the limits of their training, maintain equipment, and complete required records.
  • Staff and Learners: Report incidents, follow procedures, and understand how to access first aid support.

TRAINING & EQUIPMENT

First aid personnel receive accredited training and refresher training at appropriate intervals. Crosby Training maintains clearly identified first aid kits, emergency contact information, communication facilities, and an onsite defibrillator. Equipment is regularly inspected and replenished as required.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

First aid responders are responsible for assessing situations, providing immediate assistance, managing life-threatening conditions, and contacting emergency services when necessary. Mental health first aiders provide initial support, reassurance, and referral to appropriate services where required.

RECORD KEEPING & MONITORING

All accidents, incidents, and first aid interventions are recorded and reviewed to identify trends and improve safety arrangements. Records are stored securely and retained in accordance with legal and organisational requirements.

OFFSITE ACTIVITIES & RISK MANAGEMENT

First aid provision for offsite activities is determined through site-specific risk assessments. Consideration is given to physical hazards, mental health emergencies, access to emergency services, learner needs, safeguarding requirements, and the availability of appropriate equipment and trained personnel.

REVIEW & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

First aid arrangements are monitored through regular inspections, incident reviews, audits, and annual policy reviews. Provision is updated whenever legislation, guidance, operational activities, or identified risks change. This policy forms part of the Crosby Training Safeguarding Handbook.
