This policy ensures that all learners at Crosby Training have the right to question, challenge, or appeal assessment decisions in a fair, transparent, and timely manner. It applies to all learners and all assessment decisions, whether internal or by appointed assessors. Complaints unrelated to assessment are handled under the Complaints Policy.
KEY PRINCIPLES
Learners are informed of their right to appeal during induction.
Appeals are managed impartially and confidentially, protecting learners’ rights and the integrity of qualifications.
Records of all appeals are maintained to inform quality improvement.
Appeals are escalated to awarding bodies only after internal procedures are exhausted.
APPEALS PROCEDURE
Stage 1 – Informal Resolution:
Learner discusses the concern directly with the assessor.
Assessor reviews and attempts resolution within 5 working days.
Agreed outcomes are documented and signed by both parties.
Stage 2 – Formal Internal Appeal:
If unresolved, the learner submits a written appeal to the Academic Appeals Officer within 10 working days.
Submission includes learner details, assessment concerned, reason for appeal (procedural or academic), and supporting evidence.
The Academic Appeals Officer acknowledges receipt within 2 working days, appoints an independent reviewer, conducts a review, and provides a written outcome within 15 working days.
Reviews may include moderation of other learners’ results if relevant.
Stage 3 – External Appeal to Awarding Body:
If the learner remains dissatisfied, the appeal may be escalated to the relevant awarding body.
Crosby Training provides all records and evidence to ensure transparency.
Timelines and procedures are determined by the awarding body.
LEARNER SUPPORT
Learners may be accompanied by a tutor, mentor, or representative at any stage.
Guidance is provided on preparing and submitting appeals.
RECORD KEEPING & MONITORING
All appeals, evidence, correspondence, outcomes, and actions are recorded and stored securely for a minimum of 18 months.
Appeals data are reviewed quarterly to identify trends and inform quality improvements.
CONFIDENTIALITY & IMPARTIALITY
Appeals are reviewed by staff not involved in the original assessment decision.
All documentation and discussions are confidential and shared only with relevant staff and awarding bodies.
This policy aligns with Ofqual, awarding organisation requirements, and Ofsted/Further Education regulator expectations to ensure fair and consistent management of academic appeals.
