Our first Horticulture & Garden Construction programme proved to be a huge success – with learners completely transforming a dilapidated area of Rice Lane Community Farm into a beautiful landscaped plot. With little to no experience in the sector, our learners understood that transforming the largely wild area into a peaceful garden was going to be a task worthy of Charlie Dimmock! But, as the weeks passed, sometimes bathing them in sunshine but more often battering them with rain and snow, it was clear they had the ambition, commitment and drive to make their dream of creating a practical and enjoyable community space a reality.

The learners embarked on a programme designed to provide them with the skills and qualifications to forge a career in Horticulture and Landscaping – a sector that can be very tricky to make a start in. Through classroom sessions and hands-on demonstrations, the group learned skills ranging from laying turf and pavements to building bespoke water features and benches.

A special mention to Jack and Sam who, on completing the course, have taken work experience opportunities at the farm to continue improving the space and honing their abilities. Jack is also exploring the possibility of embarking on a business venture with Dawn – using their experience to create other community projects.
Congratulations and big thanks to everyone who took part in the programme – you’ve made a huge difference in the community. We can’t wait for the next one – check our Landscapes & Pathways course if you fancy the challenge!
