February 10th is Safer Internet Day, an annual event that encourages us all to be responsible online and follow practices that will make the internet a safer place for everyone. This year, there is a focus on exploring the safe and responsible use of AI, making us all aware of the positives and negatives of artificial intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence now plays a major role in our daily lives – from running our phones, to helping us with our homework – there is no doubt AI is here to stay; and that means we all have a responsibility to make sure we are using it with care.

When used effectively, AI can be transformative, helping us to reduce workloads and improve productivity in the training room. However, it can also be used to create harmful content or produce misinformation and – due to how accessible and easy many AI tools are to operate – this can be very dangerous.

The UK Safer Internet Centre has plenty of information on how you can stay safe while using AI, with some of the most useful tips including:

  1. Always verify the information AI has produced using a secondary source
  2. Rely on reputable organisations and official sources for your news updates
  3. Do not use AI to directly complete assignments or coursework for you
  4. Make sure you reference when you have used AI, much like you would reference a book
  5. Be wary of harmful content and the potential for AI to produce it
